Instagram launched IGTV

Instagram Launched IGTV is a brand new video sharing application recently launched by the social media giant Instagram. A few days ago, Instagram revealed to have more than 1 billion active users on Instagram. Along with this announcement, the company also launched IGTV, which is the latest application for sharing videos.

If you are a Youtuber or you just love to create and upload videos on the Internet, you must have a look at IGTV. At this point, Youtube has the monopoly in the market of video sharing platform. None of the application is able to come even close to Youtube.

The news that Instagram launched IGTV created a lot of buzzes a few days ago. IGTV has come up with a unique idea of vertical videos. It is important to understand the concept of vertical videos because IGTVonly supports vertical videos. It simply means that with IGTV, you can only upload videos in portrait mode and it will not allow you to upload videos in landscape mode. In other words, vertical videos simply mean videos in portrait mode. Instagram officials said that people are more prone to watch videos in portrait mode and thus they will only support vertical videos. Now only time will whether their analysis on people liking videos in portrait mode is correct or not.

As soon as Instagram launched IGTV, people started comparing it with Youtube. Different people are coming up with different opinions on whether IGTV will be able to compete with Youtube or not. Provided the fact that IGTV is being backed by social media giants such as Facebook and Instagram, there are high chances that IGTV will have a lot to offer. However, IGTV will certainly take some time to come closer to Youtube. Youtube has been in this business for so many years and it has performed exceptionally well. It has already cemented its place and taking on Youtube is certainly going to be one of the toughest tasks for any newcomer.

In this section, we will try to explore more about IGTV.

Instagram has embedded IGTV within the Instagram application. When you launch Instagram, you will see an IGTV icon (it looks like a TV). When you click on this icon, it will open IGTV for you where you can see videos shared by the ones whom you are following and some other recommended videos also.

Instagram has also launched a separate standalone application, named as IGTV. You can download the latest version of IGTV from the links given below.

If you just want to watch the videos, you can use the embedded version of IGTV. However, if you also want to upload videos on IGTV, we personally recommend you to use the standalone IGTV application. This will have some extra functionality like uploading videos that you have already recorded on phone, which you cannot do from the embedded IGTV as of now.

One of the most important factors of IGTV is that you will not need to create a fan base from the scratch as you need to do on Youtube. In Youtube, you start from having zero subscribers. However, all the people who are following you on Instagram will act as a readymade fan base for IGTV. As soon as you upload a video on IGTV, they will have direct access to it.

If you also want to upload videos on IGTV, you can have your own channel as people have on Youtube. However, creating an IGTV channel is an extremely easy task. You can simply follow the steps given below to create a channel on IGTV.

  • First of all, Launch IGTV app on your Android or iOS device.
  • Once done, swipe up and you will see an icon for Settings. We have marked it by the yellow arrow mark in the screenshot given below.

  • Well, that’s all. Congratulations as you have successfully created your own channel on IGTV. Now get yourself ready to post a video on your channel so that your followers can watch it.

Since IGTV is relatively new, there are a lot of guidelines that you need to follow while uploading videos on IGTV. Failing to adhere to any of the guidelines given below will result in Upload Failed error. So, you better make sure you are following each and every guideline carefully.

Video Length and File Format

If you do not have a verified Instagram account, you can upload videos of length between 15 seconds to 10 minutes. However, if you have a verified Instagram account, you can post videos up to an hour long. For now, IGTV only supports MP4 File format. If you are trying to upload a video in another file format, you will most likely get an Upload Failed error.

Video Resolution and Size

  • Videos should be vertical (not landscape) with an aspect ratio of 9:16.
  • Videos should have a minimum frame rate of 30 FPS (frames per second) and the minimum resolution of 720 pixels.
  • The maximum file size for videos that are 10 minutes or less is 650MB. The maximum file size for videos up to 60 minutes is 3.6GB.

So these are the few guidelines that you must follow if you want to upload videos on IGTV. We are expecting these guidelines to be more flexible in the coming future. For example, IGTV should support more file formats and not just MP4. This gives more flexibility to the end users and if IGTV wants to compete with the likes of Youtube, it has to take care of the end user’s flexibility.

As a newcomer, IGTV seems to be very promising. Also, we cannot deny the fact of IGTV being backed up by the likes of Facebook and Instagram. So, we are hoping that quality will never be a major issue with IGTV. We would recommend you to give IGTV a try and let us know how you like it. Your feedback means a lot to us.
